Bank Gaborone allays customer fears of security threat

Bank Gaborone allays customer fears of security threat.

Bank Gaborone, one of Botswana's commercial banks, has allayed phishing fears after customers reportedly received fraudulent emails, purportedly from the bank, requesting them to update their online login details by clicking on a link.

Sandra Mokobi, marketing and communications manager at Bank Gaborone said so far the bank has not recorded any cases of financial losses by its customers

Mokobi said the bank has proactively responded to the reports by warning its customers of the existing fraudulent email.

"The bank has processes and policies to deal with matters of fraud and accordingly the relevant systems have been triggered.

We have not received reports from our customers that they have responded to the fraudulent emails and disclosed their banking details and subsequently suffered financial loss," Mokobi said to media.

Mokobi urged customers to ensure that their computers, laptops, cell phones and tablets have anti-virus, spyware and firewall protection that is active and up to date.

Social media groups and individuals has also joined the bank in sending out scam alerts following several individuals receiving the mail

Lucian Coman wrote on facebook: "Scam Alert, looks like the scammers take it to a new level and now they target the local market in Botswana. For those of you who doesn't know what is phishing please do a Google search.

When you click a link to login for Bank Gaborone make sure is starting with HTTPS not HTTP. The bank will also have a clear domain name not a WordPress page.

This is how the scammers will get your banking details and clear your account. This trick is so old that I have no idea why they still do it, but I created the alert, for those a bit less informed and because today was the first time when I saw they target the local market specifically"

Following the widespread on ATM cards skimming that hit Botswana, especially during holidays, phishing is the latest trend in the market.
