Hoax mail targets Telecel Zimbabwe

Hoax mail targets Telecel Zimbabwe.

Telecel Zimbabwe, which is facing an uncertain future in the country after the government said it was finalising the cancellation of its licence, was on Wednesday hit by a hoax social media chat advising its mobile money subscribers to withdraw money from their accounts.

However, the company said the message was a hoax.

It has previously said it is working towards fixing its licence issues with the government, adding that the Russian owned mobile company was committed to its operations in Zimbabwe.

The hoax message reads: "To our valued Telecel subscribers, you are advised to withdraw all your money from your TeleCash wallet by the 18th of this month without failure.

"This is because our/your Telecel network service is going to be closed due to our failure to renew the operating licence in Zimbabwe, due to Telecel Zimbabwe poor finance."

The hoax message is said to be attributed to a fictitious source, Telecel Zimbabwe managing director, MacDonald Blunt, and is circulating on social networks and instant messaging platforms such as WhatsApp.

Telecel Zimbabwe has now distanced itself from the hoax message and said it is operating normally.

"Please ignore the fake and malicious chat being circulated on withdrawal of money from TeleCash. We are operating normally."

ICT Minister, Supa Mandiwanzira said early this month that President Robert Mugabe's cabinet had approved the cancellation of Telecel Zimbabwe's operating licence.

He cited failure to comply with Zimbabwe's indigenisation laws and failure to pay for its licence renewal fees on time for the government's decision.
