ISOs - online and on sale through Botswana Bureau of Standards

ISOs - online and on sale through Botswana Bureau of Standards.

Botswana Bureau of Standards (BOBS), a government body tasked with formulating standards and coordinating quality assurance activities in Botswana, has linked up with the ecommerce drive and opened a web store to sell International Organization for Standardization's (ISO) standards.

ISO is the world's largest developer of voluntary international standards and BOBS is also a full member of the organization

BOBS marketing and communication manager, Peter Mpete said the development will enable easy access to ISO standards.

"You can now purchase the ISO standards and other publications through the BOBS website," said Mpete, adding that ISO has published more than 19 500 international standards covering industries from technology, to food safety, to agriculture and healthcare.

A visit to the website indicate that the best-sellers standards are: ISO 9001:2008 on quality management systems requirements, ISO/IEC 27001:2013 information technology, security techniques and information security management systems, ISO/IEC 27002:2013 on information technology, security techniques on code of practice for information security controls and ISO 31000:2009 on risk management, the principles and guidelines.

Though BOBS is one of the few organisations in Botswana's mini e-commerce realm, e-commerce activities are expected to grow once the Electronic Communications and Transactions Act is enacted. Currently a draft online Transaction Bill Act is undergoing public review before reaching the national assembly.

The act is expected to assure online customers' security against cyber crime and privacy threats.

In 2014 local entrepreneur Tumo Maokisa opened the country's first online shop - Shop 360.

According to Maokisa, co- founder of 360 ADS - Shop360 is an easy to use online retail platform citing that it can be useful to those living in remote areas where there is mobile internet access but no retail stores with a wide variety of products.
